Transfer Case Fluid Review

September 24, 2021 by Owais Warsi Leave a Comment

All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles are likely to have transfer cases. Your transmission sends power to the front and rear wheels via the transfer case.

In some vehicles, you can choose between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, while in others, you have the option of full-time all-wheel drive. Using a low range transfer case, the wheels receive an extra amount of torque at the expense of higher speeds. This is usually displayed as “4WD Low”. The torque distribution in transfer cases varies depending on the case. Some gearboxes distribute it differently through different transfer cases.

When all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles are equipped with transfer cases, they are sometimes called power take-off units, or PTUs. Best Manual Transmission Fluid For Toyota Tacoma

Transfer cases use a fluid. What does it do?

Your transfer case’s internal parts are kept lubricated and cool by a fluid. Depending on which amount of transmission power is supplied to the rear wheels or the front wheels, some transfer cases’ wet clutches are lubricated by fluid. Automatic transmission fluids typically contain a red fluid. Transmissions vary in the thickness of the gear oil, and some require fluids specifically designed for those transmissions.

Transfer case fluid is changed for what purpose?

(Without the plug) This is an unfilled view.

Due to long-term neglect, the fluid inside the transfer case is black and sludgy.

For transfer case fluid, the shelf life is limited. Besides degrading due to their additives, transfer case fluid ceases to lubricate adequately over time. In addition to these, there are the following:

  • Wear-preventive additives (EP). Condensation within the case may react with the additives and form acids that could damage seals and other parts.
  • A detergent captures, suspends, and avoids scuffing and wearing dirt. At some point, the detergent in a fluid is full, and it can no longer trap dirt.
  • It has corrosion inhibitors that prevent corrosion. In addition to aging, these additives also lose their effectiveness over time.
  • When a gear runs through antifoaming oil, the gears do not foam. The oxygen bubbles in foamed oil weaken the barrier between the parts, making them extremely important to control.
  • Clutches are made to last longer by modifying friction.

Replacement of a transfer case can cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000. You can protect this costly component by periodically checking the fluid in the transfer case.

Is it recommended to change the transmission fluid on a regular basis?

If your vehicle uses transfer case fluid, you may have to replace it every so often. Depending on the vehicle, some transfer cases need servicing every 25,000 kilometers, whereas others don’t require servicing until they reach 100,000 kilometers. Generally, the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals for your vehicle should be followed. Contact us if you would like this information as well!

In the case of short manufacturing intervals or “lifetime” products, we may recommend you change the fluid before this. Lifetime fluid doesn’t exist, and by the term “lifetime”, one usually means the lifespan of the transfer case, not the lifespan of the whole vehicle.

The fluid in the transaxle needs to be replaced.

Making sure the fluid level in the transfer case is correct. If there is a drip of fluid visible in the plughole, these are full cases. Overfilled cases overflow.

Most vehicles don’t require much effort to change the transfer case fluid. The fluid is drained by removing the drain plug, then reinstalling the plug. To fill the fluid to the desired level, the fill plug must be removed from most transfer cases. Metal filings and other particles are removed from the plugs using a magnet.

If a bottle of fluid is placed next to the fill plug, there may not be enough room for it. Special pumps are used in these cases to fill the transfer cases.

Drain plug-less transfer cases do not require maintenance, because they are lubricated for life. This strategy hasn’t worked out well since many of these units have failed before they reach 200,000 kilometers. Using a special tool, we have been able to remove old fluid from our customers’ “unserviceable” transfer cases, thereby extending the longevity of these components.
